I think what it comes down to is that I'm a white, west-coast city boy.
Ms. Jefferson also tells me that local legal news outlets are ignoring the story (like everybody else save the "PD blogging community").
Seriously, though, I'm not a white, west-coast city boy and I think this is outrageous. I was sitting at my desk, reading the affidavits with one hand on my forehead, aghast!
This treatment of PDs and the lack of attention by any media outlets has to stop.
What was all that nonsense about entering through a particular door???
One of the problems is that some PD offices have only been around for a few years and the perception among some bars is that we're stealing their clients.
There was a certain judge in Georgia whose brother ran a criminal defense firm and if you went in front of that judge with a PD, you'd get a much harsher sentence than if you had a private attorney.
Another problem is sexism / racism. I have no doubt that the judge in Brunswick would not have held her in contempt is had been a white male.
A third problem is zealous advocacy. PDs are not there to defend their clients (because that's not what they're paid to do), they're paid to move along the cases and prevent lawsuits. You want a continuance? Denied. But if you're a private lawyer - go ahead. Get two continuances.
It's complete and utter bullshit. BUT, not all counties are like this and I've been fortunate to have been in front of some good judges (and maybe one or two assholes).
